Those on a budget may wish to take a bus to Mexico. The common way is to take a bus such as Greyhound to a U.S. border town and then cross over into Mexico and take a bus south to your destination.
It is also possibile to use one of the buses companies that have routes originating in the U.S. These will be explained below.
First you should consider if taking a bus is a good idea for you to get to your destination. If you are going deep into Mexico and do not plan on stopping in any towns in the north of the country, busing to get to Mexico may not be a good idea for you.

There are several bus companies with routes between locations in the U.S. and cities in Mexico. The companies are used mostly by Mexican nationals, but they provide an alternative means for visitors to get to Mexico.

Autobuses Americanos
Several in the locations the west and center of the U.S., are connected to a number of locations in Mexico as far south as Mexico City. The website has as number of shortcomings, but there are addresses and phone numbers of the offices in all the cities served.

Autobuses San Luis
This company connects Austin and other locations in Texas to a number of cities in Mexico including San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Celaya and Morelia.

This company runs air conditioned buses with restrooms on a route between Phoenix and Culiacan, Sinoloa. Stops include Hermosillo, Guaymas and Los Mochis.
